Personal Goals

Woohoo! Summer is here!

Here's three of my summer goals to celebrate the start of my internship!

My first goal is to become comfortable with growing and using human cell lines. The experiments I’m working with use HEPG2 human liver cells. The cells are grown and kept in a very sterile, very contained room of the lab. Experimenting with them involves special equipment and procedures, such as working under a sterile fume hood, washing my gloves with alcohol, and using special pipettes. In order for the cells to grow, they need to be periodically divided and moved to new containers. This is called “splitting” the cells, and it has its own special protocols and procedures that I’m learning. I’d really like to be able to work with the cells without supervision, and without worry that I’ll contaminate or mess something up.

My second goal is to oversee a mouse experiment from start to finish. So far, I have been working with different mice from separate experiments, completing isolated tasks. Once I learn all of the necessary skills, however, I’d like the chance to oversee an experiment from start to finish. This could potentially involve mating, monitoring, treating, euthanizing, and dissecting a group of mice.

My final goal is to stay in touch with my mentor and the lab PI after the summer ends. I’m very interested in the work they are doing, and I’ve been really impressed with the learning environment I’ve encountered. Of course, I also want to see the results of my mentor’s PhD! I’m going to focus on building relationships within the lab, so that hopefully I can return in future summers. Now that I have some experience, I’m excited to pursue future opportunities and don’t want to limit myself to a single summer assignment.

Goals for internship

Hello my fellow friends,

I am back again with another upload and this time I will be listing three goals that I wish to achieve during my internship.

1).  I plan to receive new and intriguing knowledge about bugs/insects. This knowledge can become useful to me in the future whether it be educating people who are also interested or to just use this information while I am in the GREAT OUTDOORS.

2). I am interested in cataloging. I never cataloged so this can be a new learning experience along the way. This ties in with learning research skills, maybe I may not be interested in Entomology in the future but it's a great way to learn how to catalog or to use different research materials I would never be able to obtain in a school classroom. There is a difference between a school classroom and the behind the scenes area.

3).  I can grow into new social skills. I am comfortable with group work but working independently is also something I can grow on.

So that is all I have to write, I will leave a little song below as a gift from me to help give you a stress free mind for the summer.

Goaaaaaal!

For this internship, I can expect that I will come across many hurdles and obstacles for being able to create a research poster at the end of the summer. Therefore, setting goals at the start will help guide me into finding a specific interest in the lab!

1. Find a passion through my internship.
I know for sure that I want to work in the STEM field but I am not entirely sure of a career path. I want this internship to be an opportunity for me to have more insight into other science careers.

2. Acquire research skills.
I have never worked in a lab for research before so I want this to give me experience for any future careers that I might find interest in. The research being done in the entomology lab will help expand my knowledge and I can even apply these skills in a classroom or other school assignments. Also, my supervisors and mentors seem very approachable in helping me complete projects and conduct the research.

3. Help my community.
I want my research to be meaningful outside of the lab as well. I believe that knowledge about entomology and research in general can go beyond the Entomology lab and I can contribute new ideas for the Peabody Museum, and New Haven.

Can't wait!

Hello All,

Today is June 28, 2019

And as we jump deeper in to our entomology adventure, we are preparing ourselves for what is ahead. There are so much that we can take away from our internship. What am I seeking from this opportunity? What is my goal?

As I had never experienced an internship as such before, I am wary of what to expect. However, I want to make the most of this opportunities.

I want to
- contribute to the entomology department and be of use.
-gain an interest in this topic and find more things that I find interesting.
-bond with the other people that I am working with.

Hopefully I accomplish these personal goals by the end of the internship!

-Nadia

Goals!! Goals!! Goals!!

What's up y'all? It's Aurea back here once again. As June is about to end, my internship is also coming close, so here's a couple of goals I would like to achieve:

1. Become a better researcher & contributor.

A couple of the only times I've become closest to become a researcher is during my Biology and Chemistry class in high school. Now, I'm about to use these skills I began developing in our classroom lab and use them in real life. I definitely want the work that I do to become meaningful.

2. Meet new people.
I think that this internship can create something beyond a publication journal. Perhaps, it could also become a breeding ground to make connections and meet new people. For a good chunk of my summer, I will be with these people and I think it's important that I get to know them pretty well. I bet that there are so many cool people in my lab who are researching all these amazing stuff about the environment and creating new technologies, so I want to keep up with them even after this summer.

3. Find a passion.

Perhaps during this time, I could find something new about myself, like what I want to do, or what specific things I would like to research more. At the same time, I could also learn about the things that I don't really want to do. Maybe, I'm not that interested in air quality, but perhaps the questions that I'll have from this internship will open doors to new researches for me.

Well, that's all I have for today folks. Til next time!

Internship Goals

This summer, I would like to learn as much as I possibly can about air quality; since the internship is only five weeks long, I have a few goals in mind that I would like to accomplish:

The first goal I have is that I would like to learn the necessary research skills for working in a lab, and discover what it is like to work in a lab for an extended period of time--I've only worked in labs briefly, and I'm excited to actually do meaningful work.

The second goal is that I would like to find a new facet of science that I'm interested in--even if I discover that I am not that passionate about air quality, I want to find at least one new thing that fascinates me. This internship will expose me to different overlapping areas of science and I am sure that something new will pop up that I will want to explore more!

The third and final goal is that I would like to make valuable and lasting connections with the people working in the lab. I hope that after seeing each other every day and working in close proximity, I'll get to know the people around me better and form new relationships with new people.

internship goals

Throughout this summer I hope to be able to make a difference in the entomology department here, helping contribute to work that needs to be done. I also hope to get an experience i'll be able to remember for a long time and influence future work i plan on doing. I also want the research I do to be meaningful and have a, even if small, impact in the field of research i do. I hope through this internship i will also be able to meet with others and have opportunities to do similar work in other labs or offer any assistance where it might be needed.

Article summaries

the first article is a research and analysis paper on climate changes impacts on bumbles across North America as well was Europe. The reason this study was dont is the light ohhh potential threats to the several species of bumblebees that would occur with their expansion towards the poles. To determine if climate change had affects on the species their northern and southern range limits were measured at the mean between several decades starting in 1975. There were a few investigations done on the effects towards bumblebees regarding land use as well as pesticide use in which both deemed to not have any affects on the bumblebees thermal limits.

The second article is on Lepnet, a network to digitally store information on the Lepidoptera of North American collections. While it first began in North America the network as hopes to have collaborations with others worldwide. The goal of Lepnet is to transform Lepidoptera specimen data into easy access digital formats to aid in global research of taxonomy, ecology, and evolutionary biology. This popular insect, while the most collected worldwide, the amount of digitized specimen is relatively low in comparison. Lepnet has four interrelated goals for digitization, the first being databasing and mobilizing label information from over 1.7 million specimens in the 27 partnering collections and integrate these with more than 1 million existing records. The second goal is databasing 35000 larval samples with associated host plant data which marks the first significant digitization of Lepidoptera. The third goal is generation 214000 images of Lepidoptera specimens. The final goal is making all the images and data available online and available as downloadable datasets through several data portals. The importance of this system is that it will allow anyone to be able to access this information to advance any future research.

Entomology Internship: The Beginning

Image result for bug gif

Hello All,

Today is June 21 2019,

My internship mates and I begin our journey by learning more about the endeavor. The world of bugs is waiting for us, and we cannot wait!

We met with Mel, who has been in our footsteps before. She enlightened us by sharing her experience of her time in her internship. Mel also answered our burning questions, revealing us of our anxious thoughts.

During this training day, we played a bug game and looked at various air quality maps, in hopes to prepare us to be inquisitive. This habit of asking questions should help us gain the most information and have the best experience!

Although I am slightly nervous, at least I am assured that I am not blindly jumping to the unknown. Excitement is overcoming me as the day we start is slowly approaching.
Wish Me Luck!

-Nadia

Entomology Internship

21 June 2019

Hello friends!
For the past two weeks, we have been preparing for our internship at the Entomology lab. This will help my friends and I work successfully in the lab and guide us into asking more questions. It helps us explore what we know and what we don't know, and sparks more curiosity. The training is a way to understand what we are working with
and set expectations for the next month.

Today, we reviewed bug cards to help us generate questions about the information given to us. We also reviewed websites to look at air quality and ask questions about the data. I feel that the card activity helped me the most in generating more questions.

For this internship, I am looking forward to working with people in the lab and with my EVO friends. I hope that I can discover new things about my interests that I didn't know before. I am excited to learn more about bugs and look at specimen that I have never seen before. Hopefully, this opportunity will help me answer any questions I have or help me discover career choices in the future!

Peace out,
Adira Ahmad Rizal

Prologue: Environmental Engineering Internship

Hello!

My name is Aurea Bianca Orencia. I recently graduated from New Haven Academy and I am going to attend Brigham Young University this fall to major in Chemical Engineering. This summer I am going to join Dr. Drew Gentner and his crew as an intern where we will be measuring air quality all over New Haven. It will be a Environmental/Chemical Engineering internship, so I am really excited to see what this field has in store for me.

This summer, during my internship, I hope to learn:

What instruments are used to measure air quality?
What is the biochemistry/engineering technology behind our daily lives?
How can we create technology that can make our lives better? What are the procedures and factors that are considered in making them?
What can we do as citizens of New Haven to maintain a healthy air quality?
How do we use data we acquire to improve people's lives? Where does the data we acquire go to? Do political figures in Connecticut use them to better regulate and help people's lives?

I am very excited to work with Dr. Gentner and people in his lab, and also my fellow EVO student Paula to learn more about air quality in New Haven. I can't wait to witness data collection, data interpretation, and performing experiments that I know contributes to our daily lives.

Catch ya later,

Aurea :)

Entomology Internship :)

Hello Peeps,

it is your friend, Johanyx and I'm here to talk about my thoughts before starting my first internship. It feels so weird to have this sort of "responsibility" on my shoulders. But that's all in the sense of growing up. I mean I am nervous starting a whole new "chapter" as a semi-child. But it is all cool beans. I do not really have any questions but I am prepared to start learning in a different environment, that is not a school classroom.

So yee, you will be updated in the coming weeks. So stay tuned :)

Speaking of Entomology, here is a "bug" song called Butterfly by Umi. She is really chill, so go check her out ;)

entomology internship

Today i learned a lot about how many many bugs live and survive in the wild and im curious as to how many species of bugs ill be working with this summer and if it specific to any one area of bugs that ill be working with. Im also curious to know what ill be doing with these bugs whether its determining something about their behavior, biological structures, or any environmental affects on them. Along with what ill be doing with them, where will i be working with them? I assume a lab is the most obvious answer but what exactly will i be doing that requires a lab setting. Another question I have is what is the purpose of the research i will be doing and what affect it has once it is published, will others be able to view it and if the topic of research is chosen by me or chosen for me?

Environmental Engineering Internship

This summer, during my internship, I hope to learn:
What is used to measure air quality?
How can people help improve air quality in their daily lives?
How often is air quality monitored exactly? Is it constant or at certain intervals?
What factors contribute the most to the quality of air?
Where are the places in the world that have the lowest/worst quality of air? What about in New Haven?
Which cities in the US are most at risk when it comes down to air quality?
What are the health risks of having low quality air?

I'm excited to work collaboratively in the lab and built more air quality modules like the ones that we saw, or to analyze data collected by the lab, or to do anything else involved with air quality/the environment!

I also am curious about how different demographics come into play when considering air quality--I had never considered that something like demographics could affect something that we take for granted, like our air. I also really like to look at the social aspects of major science issues, so I am looking forward to seeing any data related to New Haven/Connecticut in general and examining how it affects people, especially those close to us.

Research Poster!

Our internship has officially come to a close! For my poster, I will be summarizing one of the experiments that we helped with in the air ...
